Adorable. Novelty. Cute. The title of today's post tells it all. That's what we're going to be looking at today. Sorry. I know I promised to do a recap of my Polyvore sets, and explain the method behind the, well, not madness, how about: creativity. Anyway, with a hundred or more sets published since I made that promise, you could say I'm still trying to play catch up.
So. Let's get back to what appears to be a growing trend: the adorable bag or purse.
This photo will give you an idea of what I'm talking about:
Now, I bet you're thinking: "What the heck is that? Is that a purse, or something for the kids, or do you just hang it from your mailbox?" Well, a couple of those thoughts are correct, because it is indeed a women's handbag, but probably for the younger women. It's not really age discrimination, it just seems oriented to the teen and twenty something set. Here's some more photos of the same bag:
Fairly simple construction, not a lot of room for stuff; it's its incredible shape that's the thing. The classic pink flamingo, that used to, and still do, adorn some people's lawns. In spite of being adorable and down right cute, it's a got a wee bit of edginess to it. More about that in just a bit.
Here's another example:

Yep, that's a bag, not an oversized camera. Reminds me a little of some old '60's vinyl satchel type bags, except that this purse looks so much like a camera.
I don't own either of these bags, so I'll have to make my judgments from the photos, and it looks like this bag is considerably softer than the flamingo bag.
Here's another example:
This knapsack looks like it just walked off the set of a Disney Pixar "Monsters" sequel. So. You know, this trend isn't completely new: I'm sure you remember the teddy bear knapsacks that were all the rage, and still are, among young adults. Basically, I'd say these bags are pretty much cut from the same cloth, or, rather, PU.
So. We've got an inanimate object, and two creatures, what other shapes can purses be shaped into? I think we'll slide into this one gradually, and I'm going to start off with a purse that was featured in one of my previous posts, that I'm lucky enough to own:
If you'd been checking out women's purses and bags on Aliexpress and DHgate, you'd know that purses with 3-Dimensional flowers on them are real big on those sites. Although this purse is just a purse with a really big flower on it, it's pretty much a cute, adorable bag too.
If you like the plant life motif, this bag might strike your fancy:
The classic bucket with orange or lemon slices appliques. Still, not quite like our first three bags, but we're getting there, so, here goes nothing:
Now we're talking. Very similar to the flamingo purse in that this bag is a little on the flat side, not complaining, just explaining. It appears to be much more roomy, with the long zip all around the front perimeter.
Getting back to edible plants, check this one out:
Looks like a pineapple clip art that's invaded the third dimension. Basically, a satchel with the mesh and stalk added on. It isn't at all different from the patent PU flower bag in construction, it's just that the plant parts cover the bag so much, it looks more like a pineapple, than a bag with pineapple applique.
And, speaking of pineapples:
A hybrid of the cactus and lemon/orange bag: a bucket with some additional coloring and detailing that looks pineappleish.
Now, what other fruits can be purse themes? Here you go:
Incredible! It looks like someone turned their watermelon into a purse! Undoubtably, however, it doesn't taste as good. At first glance, it does look a little like something you'd find on a soldier or other military personnel.
There are other kinds of foods that have been turned into bags:
A literally yummy looking ice cream cone purse. And in case that one melts before you get a chance to taste it, take a lick, I mean look, at this one:
A little more abstract with the pom pom filling, though still in a tasty and cute pink color. Well, let's not get too filled up on ice cream, because more desert is on its way:
Umm! Cupcakes! Or, maybe, it's ice cream again. Either way, looks pretty darn appetizing.
So. That's all of the examples I've got for you today. The next question is: what the heck are you going to wear these with? Well, I think the first inclination is to go for something cute, maybe demure, innocent, or young looking. Like a skater dress or skirt, a high collar top, maybe something animeish; something like that. Well, that's cool. Not knocking that at all, as a matter of fact I've paired a few of these bags, and some like them, up in a similar fashion in some of my Polyvore sets.
Now, I mentioned earlier the edgy direction, and that's the direction I took the red, patent Pu rose appliqued bag (photo above):
I didn't invent this trend at all, of pairing something adorable with something, a wee bit more, say, radical. But, what I found is, that it worked perfectly with this outfit. As I explained in that post - 'Groovy Boho', or some other name, sorry - normally that kind of purse would go with a romantic looking maxi dress, or some kind of frilly, lacey, animeish outfit, and I totally turned it on it's head here. Adds a wee bit of femininity to an outfit that, with some small alterations, would not be out of place on a male, '60's rock star. Speaking of the music connection, it looks like the whole trend of the cute bags is somehow associated with some form of music. It depends upon how old you are: pre-teen and early teen girls usually go for the cute look with the cute bags, and older ones go for somethin like, a teddy bear knapsack with, grunge, maybe even death metal outfits, or punk - don't forget a few over sized safety pins strategically placed in the bear.
Other than that, you don't see much of these bags out on the street, or, at least, I haven't.
I guess the big question now is, am I going to buy more of these? Well, besides the red, patent PU etc. purse in the photos, I've added a few similar ones to my collection - look for a post with them in the future, can't promise when. Not sure if I'm going to satisfy my taste with an ice cream cone, watermelon, or cupcake, however. In case you do, a lot of these bags aren't terribly expensive: less than twenty bucks for the most part, and I'm sure you can find them for less.
Alrighty then. That's it for today's adorable edition. Don't forget to check back for even more exciting fashion findings. And, I promise, I promise, I promise, the Polyvore set round up is in the pipeline, you just have to give me a wee bit more time.
Catchya later.
Ciao.
